Where it comes from
Aluminium poisoning is mainly seen on the Indian subcontinent where it is used in sprays for grain and cereal crops. A product containing aluminium phosphate is used as a fungicide for stored grain crops.
Aluminium is abundant in the world like so many other toxic substances. Many minor health problems can be the result of poisoning.
In the home aluminium van be found in saucepans, metal cans, baking powder, self raising flour, salt, antacid preparations and deodorant and antiperspirants, cereal products, toothpaste and tooth whitening products, cosmetics, sunscreens and some soaps.
Symptoms and dangers
Acute aluminium poisoning results in profound system shock, multi-organ failure and myocarditis and a small dose is only required. The fatal dose is between 0.15 and 5 grams. It is also a common suicide method in the region.
Effects of ingestion are seen within a very short time and are dose and time dependent.
- Major circulatory collapse
- Loss of fluids
- Damage to the adrenal gland
- Headache, dizziness
- Fatigue and muscle weakness
- Chest tightness
- Nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea
- Sensitivity to hot and cold
Inhalation of aluminium phosphates produce:
- Acute respiratory distress
- Heart failure and or arrhythmias
- Convulsions
- Coma
After a period of low dose ingestion liver and kidney toxicity is seen.
Aluminium can also be passed to unborn babies via the placenta
There is no antidote to acute aluminium poisoning but the use of magnesium sulphate may stop a patient from dying.
The use of a low dose of potassium permanganate in a gastric lavage can cause the toxin to decompose.
